A Deeper Faith

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

“…Although the doors were shut (because the disciples were afraid of the Jews), Jesus came and stood among them and said, ”Peace be with you.” (John 20:20)

Not long ago, I read that a survey had been done in a major American denomination. The question was asked of all the participants in the church, “What do you look for most in a church?” Number one they saidwas “friendliness.” Second place was “bold interesting preaching.” Nobody put down “locked doors or frightened participants….Fear.”

The disciples in John 20 are a church with absolutely nothing going for it, according to the survey. Except that, when it gathered the risen Jesus pushed through the locked door, threw back the bolt, and stood among them. Jesus went up to Thomas who doubted the truth of the resurrection and said, “Put your finger here in my wound and put your hand in my side. Do not doubt, believe.” (John 20:27)

I have heard of churches with 12 bowling alleys, their own Starbucks, big choirs, meeting in a school, gathering in ancient cathedrals, and coming together under highway overpasses. The formula for faith does not change. The risen Jesus reaches into our fear filled lives, touches our scars, and addresses our doubts that faith might be birthed within us.

May such faith be yours this day.

I look forward to this Sunday, as we depart from our “normal” worship pattern to go out into the world to share in an “Extreme Community Makeover.” I believe that as we go out this Sunday to serve and worship in the world- fears, doubts, and scars will be transformed into a deeper faith by the risen Jesus. (Please visit the GGCC website to find details as to how you can be involved with this Sunday’s Extreme Community Makeover.)

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
