All You Need is Love…

I have a lot of things I like to do. A lot of material things I like to have. All kinds of things I have been blessed with. Some have come to the point where I question their value in my life. I am beginning to realize there is a key item missing in the things that lack value to me – LOVE. I can do anything with or without love. Work, play, family, service or just time alone. I am learning to keep love in all things, which makes every day an enlightening experience for me, one that leaves me more and more in awe of this gift God has given us. Love crosses over into anything we do. Huey Lewis was right about the power of love.

I have seen people at a service event, and love shines through, making the service provided much more meaningful and powerful. People that have been starved for love in their life are magically healed by the touch of love. And once touched, they nurture and feed that love like it was always there. What an amazing and powerful gift, one an amazing God has given us. I no longer question what I do or have, but I question where the love is. If love is not there, God is not there, and there is no meaning. I’ve been working at this for over 55 years and I feel like a rookie, but it just gets better and better. Love is the one thing I can’t give or get too much of.

“My friends, how desperately do we need to be loved and to love. When Christ said that man does not live by bread alone, he spoke of a hunger. This hunger was not the hunger of the body. It was not the hunger for bread. He spoke of a hunger that begins deep down in the very depths of our being. He spoke of a need as vital as breath. He spoke of our hunger for love.

Love is something you and I must have. We must have it because our spirit feeds upon it. We must have it because without it we become weak and faint. Without love our self-esteem weakens. Without it our courage fails. Without love we can no longer look out confidently at the world. We turn inward and begin to feed upon our own personalities, and little by little we destroy ourselves. With it we are creative. With it we march tirelessly. With it, and with it alone, are we able to sacrifice for others.” – Chief Dan George

God, I love you. Amen
