50 Days

Happy Easter!

Yes, I meant to say that. In the church year, the season of Easter is 50 days long and we’re just beginning the celebration. So,

Happy, happy Easter!

Why would we need 50 days to celebrate Easter? I think perhaps because we’re not sure how to bring resurrection into daily life. The Easter stories in the Bible remind us of that which we do not recognize – Jesus. The women were thought to be telling idle tales, Thomas couldn’t believe until he had seen, the disciples repeatedly did not see that it was Jesus in their midst. In the disciples’ limited vision and in our own limited vision, we miss the truth that the risen Christ is among us.

This season of 50 days of Easter invites us to see the world in a different way. Practicing resurrection is seeing with new eyes, hearing with new ears and feeling with new hearts. Perhaps we walk by many redemptive acts and redeemed people and things in our haste to move on.

Eugene Peterson writes, “The practice of resurrection is an intentional, deliberate decision to believe and participate in resurrection life, life out of death, life that trumps death, life that is the last word, Jesus life.”

May we continue to walk as people who freely confess the risen Christ and practice resurrection. Living into our gift of resurrection and sharing its healing powers with those around us.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 0r 10:30 am. It would be good to see you in person – but if you must, we hope you can join us via the live stream.

Easter blessings,

With thanks to Christine Valters Paintner and Sarah Bessey for inspiring this devotion.
