1 in 6 Face Hunger; 5 in 6 Can Help

My daughter Tessa and I drove by this sign in Waco, TX earlier this summer. Reading the words of this street sign, “1 in 6 Face Hunger; 5 in 6 Can Help”, really seems like the issue of “hunger” shouldn’t really be an issue at all. I thought about cropping the car out of the picture, but I actually think it reinforces the meaning of the picture. 1 in 6 are hungry; 5 in 6 people have the ability to help stop hunger. If my math is correct, all it takes to end hunger is for the remainder of us that can and have the ability to help, to give only 3.3% of our monthly groceries in food. Doing so, we can have this problem solved and over. If a family spends $1,000 a month at the grocery store, that means only a donation of $33 of food a month to a local food bank. Many spend less a month, which makes their donation even more affordable. This is a battle we can easily win. We have the means and the resources God has provided us to make hunger go away.

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?” Matthew 25:37 (NIV)

This Sunday in church we learned The Gathering Place’s food cupboard is at 50% of its current needs and given that kids are out of school for the summer, summer needs have increased by 30%. Jesus is telling us, he is hungry. Won’t you join me in bringing a donation to the church and help fill Betsy’s Cupboard (the name of the Gathering Place’s food pantry) so that we can help the 1 in 6 who are hungry? I know we can make a difference. The Lord is hungry and thirsty. Let’s not let that go unnoticed. Thanks in advance for your help to end hunger.
For a specific list of needs, you may want to check out The Gathering Place’s website: http://www.tgpdenver.org/needs. They have specifically listed needs of non-perishable, unexpired food, new personal supplies and new baby items, as well as some other items listed there as well. Thanks for making a difference.

Dear God, Our gifts are many, our resources plentiful. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to feed others, and take away their hunger for food and replace it with a hunger for your Word and love. We give thanks for your love and providing us ways to share your love with others.
